Women's Tennis Wins Third Straight, 6-1 over George Fox

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Union College women's tennis team remained perfect on their Spring Break trip with a 6-1 victory over George Fox University on Tuesday afternoon at the USTA National Campus.

Four players earned two wins apiece to lead Union (5-2) to a third straight win, as juniors Sydney Alphabet, Claire Langille and Chara Meidani as well as first-year Calista Finkelstein all won in both singles and doubles play. In total, all seven Union players were a part of at least one win on the afternoon.

The Garnet Chargers started the day strong by sweeping the three doubles matches to garner the opening point. Alphabet and Finkelstein got the ball rolling with a 6-3 win over Cassey Hitch and Ari Rader at third doubles, taking the final three games to break a three-all tie. Meidani and junior Kennedy Alexis won four of their final five games against the regionally-ranked tandem of Riley Bobkiewicz and Kalli Wiker to clinch the point with a 6-4 first-doubles victory. Langille and junior Skylar Semon completed the sweep with a 7-6 (8-6) win over Shanah Denham and Sophie Denham, jumping out to a 6-2 lead in the breaker before holding on to win.

Finkelstein quickly doubled the Union lead with a pair of 6-2 sets over Abigail Bond in their fifth-singles matchup before George Fox (10-5) earned its only point at second singles from regionally-ranked Wiker. But it was all Union after that, sweeping the final four matches to complete the win.

Meidani fought off Bobkiewicz at the top flight for a 6-2, 7-5 win, winning at love down 4-5 in the second before winning a pair of decisive deuce points to emerge with the victory. Langille clinched the win with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 sixth-singles triumph over Hitch, followed very soon after by first-year Samantha Jacobs finishing off Shanah Denham by a 6-3, 6-2 score at the third flight. Alphabet completed the day with her second win of the afternoon, knocking off Sophie Denham, 6-4, 6-1.

Union will finish off their week in Orlando tomorrow with a pair of challenges, taking on ITA #28 Carleton College at 8:30 a.m. and Augustana College at 1:30 p.m. at the USTA National Campus.
