POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team was limited to four hits in nine innings as the Garnet Chargers dropped a 3-2 game to Vassar College in game three of the teams' weekend Liberty League series on Saturday afternoon at Prentiss Field.
After winning twice yesterday to claim the series victory, Union (13-7, 2-1 Liberty League) could not finish off the sweep on Saturday. First-year
AJ Cutler had two of the team's four hits and drove in both Garnet Charger runs on the afternoon, while senior
Dan Sheeran and junior
Nico Lambros both had a hit and run scored on the day.
Sophomore
Jacob Skarlis got the start for Union and left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first as neither team crossed the plate over the first three innings. Vassar (6-11, 1-5 Liberty League) mounted a two-out rally to score the game's first run in the fourth inning and added two unearned runs in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead.
The visitors recorded three of their four hits in the sixth inning, when they scored twice to get back in the game. Sheeran led off with a single and advanced to second on a Lambros base hit. After a groundout moved both runners into scoring position, Cutler delivered a two-out single to make it a one-run game.
The visitors could not threaten the rest of the way, however, as Union went down in order in the seventh and eighth innings and managed only a one-out single by Cutler in the ninth.
Skarlis (0-3) took the loss for Union, allowing only three runs (one earned) on seven hits in 6.1 innings. Zach Berner (1-2) tossed seven innings of three-hit, two-run ball to earn the win for Vassar and Sage Roy-Burman threw a pair of scoreless innings to earn the save.
Union is slated to be back in action on Tuesday with a non-conference game against Middlebury College set for 3:30 p.m. at Central Park.
