SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – St. Lawrence University scored six straight goals between the second and fourth quarters to take a six-goal lead and the Saints held off a hard-charging Union College men's lacrosse team in the fourth quarter to earn a 11-8 victory over the Garnet Chargers in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
No player on either side scored more than two goals on the afternoon, with Union (3-6, 1-1 Liberty League) led by senior
Henry Quaintance with a pair. Seniors
Peter Kip and
Archie McEvoy and junior
Walker Popko also had two points with a goal and an assist apiece.
David Herlihy, Daniel Mahoney and Caleb Torres scored two goals each for St. Lawrence (4-4, 1-1 Liberty League), while Jamie Rosenzweig led all players with four points on a goal and three helpers.
Both teams scored twice in a low-scoring first frame, with the Saints bookending goals by the Garnet Chargers. SLU scored first 7:38 into the game on a Patrick Murray tally, but Union came back with two in a row off the sticks of sophomore
Mike Wall and senior
Archie McEvoy to take a 2-1 lead with 2:29 left. That edge turned out to be Union's only one of the day, as Mahoney scored in the final seconds of the first to tie the score and the visitors scored on the first possession of the second.
Quaintance struck while man-up to even the score at three with 13:00 on the second-quarter clock, but the Saints scored twice in less than a minute to take back a 5-3 lead. It was Union's turn to score twice in less than 60 seconds soon after, beginning with a beautiful putaway by Quaintance off a feed from classmate
Liam McGovern. Popko knotted the score at five 58 seconds later at the 8:37 mark.
Popko's goal was the last one scored by Union in almost 32 minutes of game action, however, as SLU scored the next six goals to take control of the game. Torres scored 14 seconds after Quaintance's tally to regain the SLU edge and the two teams went over 14 minutes without a goal on either side before the visitors netted the only four goals of the third quarter to take a 10-5 lead into the fourth.
Desperation set in for the Garnet Chargers after Mahoney's second of the day put SLU up 11-5 with 8:57 left, as the home team limited the Saints to one on-target shot the rest of the way. Goals by Kip and senior
Luke McHugh seven seconds apart provided a spark to get Union back into the game, but SLU goalie Michael Marinello made huge stops on Union's next two possessions to keep it a four-goal game. Junior
Emmett Lyne scored a man-up tally with 3:29 left to make the score 11-8, but another Marinello save and two turnovers sealed Union's fate.
Union finished the game with a 42-35 edge in shots, including a 14-6 advantage in the fourth quarter. Marinello made 16 saves to earn the win, while sophomore
Nick Lynch had 15 saves for the home team.
Union will return to action next Saturday with another Liberty League matchup at Ithaca College beginning at noon.
