Baseball Drops Midweek Matchup With SUNY Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team dropped an 8-3 non-conference loss to SUNY Oneonta on Tuesday afternoon at Red Dragon Field.

The teams combined for three scoreless innings before the Red Dragons found the scoreboard. After Joey Dwyer was hit by a pitch and stole two consecutive bases, an RBI single from Anthony Foglia saw Oneonta take a 1-0 lead. The Red Dragons loaded the bases with two outs later in the inning and a two-run RBI single saw the hosts take a 3-0 lead.

Oneonta added a solo run in the fourth before tacking on two in the sixth. A leadoff double by Foglia put him in scoring position and Logan Hutter followed up with an RBI single to put Oneonta up 5-0. After stealing second, an RBI single brought Hutter home.

The hosts added two runs in the bottom of the eighth to take an 8-0 lead. Union responded in the top of the ninth with three runs. Back-to-back walks put runners on first and second with two outs. Sophomore Will Kelly lined an RBI single into left field and an error put him on second. Sophomore Ben Raphael hit a single into center field to bring home both Union runners to cut the lead. First-year Josiah Martinez was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second, but a groundout one batter later cut the rally short.

Junior Jack Klein started for the Garnet Chargers and pitched three scoreless innings with two hits and two strikeouts. First-year Ryan Calvario is credited with the loss with three runs, one earned, on two hits in two-thirds of an innings.

Union opens the home portion of the schedule on Saturday with a non-conference doubleheader against SUNY Cobleskill. First pitch is set for noon at Central Park "A" Diamond.
