Suter Breaks All-Time Wins Record, Baseball Sweeps SUNY Cobleskill

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Senior Chris Suter broke the Union College baseball team's all-time wins record during a doubleheader sweep of SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday afternoon at Honey Field. Union took game one 12-2 and came back from a deficit in game two to win 6-4 in a pair of seven-inning games.

Suter broke the program record of 19 wins set by Joe Urschel '75. Urschel went 19-6 between 1972-75. Suter earned his 20th win this afternoon to improve to 3-0 this season. To date, Suter is 20-8 with 181.1 innings pitched and 115 career strikeouts. This season, Suter has a 1.93 ERA and is holding opposing batters to a .217 batting average.

Game One: Union 12, Cobleskill 2

Four Union batters recorded a multi-hit game in the series opener. Senior Kyle Zaslaw went 2-for-4 with a homerun, four RBIs and a run scored. First-year Dylan Swarts continued his strong rookie campaign with two hits, three RBIs, and a run scored while junior Caleb Miller scored three of Union's 12 runs.

Union made a statement early in the game with a pickoff at second base in the first inning. The offense put up two in the bottom of the frame and did not look back the rest of the game. Junior Nico Lambros drew a walk and made it to third courtesy of a stolen base and a wild pitch which set up Miller to steal second after drawing a walk. A sac fly by junior Cooper Ames brought home the first run before an RBI single by senior Sam Strazza put Union up 2-0.

Suter and the infield combined again for a pickoff in the second inning and in a similar fashion to the first, the Garnet Chargers plated two more runs in the bottom of the second. With two runners on, first-year Dylan Swarts doubled into left field to bring home Union's third run of the game. Lambros grounded out to shortstop, but first-year Will Kelly made it across home to double Union's lead.

Union added another run in the bottom of the fourth with a sac fly from Swarts to bring sophomore Noah DiCaprio across home from third.

The Fighting Tigers bit back in the top of the fifth with two runs of their own to make it a three-run game. Cobleskill loaded the bases and a two-run RBI single with one out put the visitors on the board. The Union infield turned a double play two batters later to get out of the inning and preserve the lead.

Union added one run in the bottom of the fifth before exploding for six runs in the sixth inning. A leadoff single by senior Dan Sheeran and a walk from Kelly put runners on for the Garnet Chargers. Sophomore Danny Talacci pinch ran for Sheeran and crossed home when Swarts hit an RBI single to center. A bunt single by Lambros loaded the bases with no outs. Miller made it to first on fielder's choice while another runner made it home. Swarts scored on a while pitch two batters later. With runners on the corners, Zaslaw launched a three-run homerun over the left field fence to push Union to 12 runs.

Suter struck out two in five innings of work with two runs on six hits. Sophomore Jacob Skarlis struck out the side in the sixth inning. Skarlis pitched two scoreless innings and struck out five of the seven batters faced.

Game Two: Union 6, Cobleskill 4

Union battled back from a three-run deficit to take a 6-4 win in game two.

The Fighting Tigers loaded the bases in the first inning. An RBI single up the middle brought two runs home. A wild pitch with two runners on saw Cobleskill take a three-run advantage after the first inning. Union responded in the bottom of the frame. Swarts drew a leadoff walk and Kelly was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Back-to-back walks by Miller and Ames put a run on the board to cut the lead to two.

Trailing 3-1 heading into the fifth inning, Swarts hit a leadoff single and made it to second with a single from Miller. Ames drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Strazza lined a triple into deep center field to clear the bases and give Union a one-run lead. A wild pitch in the next at-bat saw Strazza cross the plate to put Union up by two.

The Garnet Chargers loaded the bases again in the sixth inning. A fielding error saw Ames reach first and junior JT Psirogianes cross home for Union's sixth run.

The Fighting Tigers hit three singles in a row with one out to make it a 6-4 game. Senior Alex Erickson entered the game and closed the door with six strikes to retire the final two batters for his first save of the season.
