SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – A fourth-quarter comeback came up a few goals short for the Union College men's lacrosse team on Wednesday evening, as the Garnet Chargers fell to Williams College by a 12-10 score at a rain-soaked Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
Seniors
Archie McEvoy and
Peter Kip led Union (0-3) with three points apiece, with McEvoy scoring three times and Kip chipping in two goals and an assist. Five other Garnet Chargers had one goal apiece, including senior
Chris Connolly and first-year
Finbar Holland with their first collegiate tallies.
Senior
Luke McHugh went 16-for-25 on faceoffs and led all players with 10 ground balls. Among non-FOGOs, senior
Patrick Reilly grabbed a game-best six grounders while senior
Shaine Luzietti chipped in four ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers.
Jesse Shapiro scored a team-leading three goals and Harrison Cross led all players with four points on two goals and two assists to lead Williams (2-0).
The lead changed hands four times during a back-and-forth opening half. The Ephs got on the board first, but the Garnet Chargers got two in a row from McEvoy and sophomore
Mekhi Taylor to grab their first lead of the game with 2:44 left in the first. Williams ended the first and started the second with goals to retake the advantage and, after the teams traded goals, tallies from McEvoy and Kip put Union up 5-4 with 5:50 remaining. However, Williams scored on the next possession and then again in the final minute to take a 6-5 lead into halftime.
The visitors' lead was still one at 7-6 after a goal from junior
Walker Popko when Williams made its move, scoring twice in a minute on two separate occasions as part of a 5-0 run that gave the Ephs a 12-6 lead with 10:15 remaining in the game. Union scored the final four goals of the game to attempt a comeback, with Holland and Kip finding the net 27 seconds apart to make the score 12-8 with 5:15 on the clock and then McEvoy and Connolly converting 20 seconds apart in the final minute. However, the deficit was too great to overcome.
Both goaltenders played well despite the inclement conditions. Sophomore
Nick Lynch got his first collegiate start in goal for Union and made 12 saves on 24 shots, while Matt Wetmore also made 12 stops on 22 on-target attempts for Williams.
Union will play its next four games away from home, beginning on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Muhlenberg College.
