Union Rebounds to Split Doubleheader at Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Union bounced back in Game 2 of Monday afternoon's conference doubleheader against Skidmore College at Wagner Park.

Game One: Skidmore 11, Union 2

Skidmore came out swinging, plating one run in the first inning and adding four more in the second to jump out to a 5–0 lead.

Union broke through in the third. Senior Riley Callahan led off with a single, and fellow first-year Carra Cleaves followed with a base hit through the left side to move Callahan to third. First-year Kyla Springer then delivered a single down the left field line to drive in Callahan.

Skidmore responded in the bottom half of the inning with another run.

Union struck again in the fourth. Junior Elizabeth Werner led off with a single, followed by a hit from first-year Amy FitzPatrick to move Werner to second. Junior Sam Rose then singled up the middle to drive in Werner, giving Union its second run of the game.

The Thoroughbreds tacked on five more runs in the fourth. A scoreless fifth inning sealed Skidmore's 11–2 victory.

Game Two: Union 3, Skidmore 2

First-year Carra Cleaves struck out seven while allowing just three hits and two earned runs. Junior Ellie Wintringer led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Senior Riley Callahan also went 2-for-3 and scored a run.

After a scoreless first, Union found their momentum early in the second inning. Wintringer hit a homerun to give the Garnet Chargers an early 1–0 lead.

Union added to its lead in the third. Callahan led off with a single, advanced to second and third on ground outs, and came home on a muffed throw to make it 2–0.

Skidmore's Jessica Nachamie scored on a fly out in the fourth to trim the lead to 2–1.

Union struck again in the fifth. After Springer doubled to right, senior Melody Kappel entered as a pinch runner. Wintringer followed with a single to center, bringing Kappel home for the game winning run.

Skidmore responded with an RBI single from Nachamie in the sixth to once again make it a one-run game. But Cleaves and the Union defense came up big in the seventh to lock down the 3–2 victory.

Union returns to conference action on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader against St. Lawrence at Alexander Field. The first pitches are scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
