Garnet Chargers Can't Keep Up with Red Dragons in 12-5 Loss

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team saw SUNY Oneonta score the final seven runs of the game over the last four innings to pull away for a 12-5 over the Garnet Chargers in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at the Central Park "A" Diamond.

First-years Dylan Swarts and AJ Cutler led Union (16-12) with three hits apiece, with Cutler driving in one and Swarts scoring once. Junior JT Psirogianes drove in a team-leading two runs for the home team as well.

Oneonta (17-9-1) was paced by Anthony Loia and Joey Dwyer with three hits apiece, while Josh Gilkey drove in two runs and scored three times.

Oneonta scored five runs over the first two innings, but Union battled back to even the score after three frames. Cutler got the home team on the board with a two-out single to score senior Dan Sheeran in the first inning to get Union back within two. The Garnet Chargers scored four times with two outs in the third to even the score, helped by an RBI single by senior Kyle Zaslaw and a two-run double off the bat of Psirogianes. A muffed throw by the first baseman on a bunt single from junior Nico Lambros allowed Psirogianes to come home and tie the game.

Senior Cal Place was the first out of the bullpen for the Garnet Chargers and kept Union in the game with his longest outing of the year, tossing three scoreless innings before giving up a pair of runs in the sixth. Junior Alex Oppenheimer came on to strike out a pair with the bases loaded to limit the damage and keep the home team in range. However, the Red Dragons tacked on two more in both the seventh and eighth innings and one more in the ninth to provide plenty of separation.

Place (0-1) suffered the loss for Union, allowing two runs on three hits in 3.1 innings of relief. Dominic Colarusso (1-0) earned the win for the Red Dragons with two scoreless innings as part of a bullpen that tossed 6.1 scoreless frames to end the game.

Union will be back in action tomorrow with a non-conference matchup at Mount St. Mary College beginning at 3 p.m.
