Tennis Matches Wins and Winning Streak Records by Beating New Paltz

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The #37 Union College women's tennis team matched program records for most single-season wins and longest winning streak by earning its sixth consecutive victory with a 6-1 win over SUNY New Paltz on Friday evening at the Union Tennis Courts.

The win gives Union (11-3) its program-record 11th victory for the second consecutive season, while the six straight wins match the program standard first set in 1982 and matched in 2016.

Juniors Sydney Alphabet, Claire Langille and Skylar Semon as well as first-year Calista Finkelstein all were dual winners on the day for Union, combining for six of the team's seven wins.

The Garnet Chargers started the afternoon with a pair of quick doubles wins to garner the opening point. Alphabet and Finkelstein set the tone with a 6-0 win over Nina Genzone and Olivia Kunz at third doubles, followed by Langille and Semon defeating Angelica Gabriel and Sydney Sladicka by a 6-2 score at the second flight.

Moving to singles play, Union made quick work of New Paltz in several flights to clinch the victory. Langille was the first to finish at the fifth flight with a pair of 6-1 sets to defeat Alyssa Trokie, followed by Finkelstein's 6-2, 6-1 third-singles win over Gabriel and Semon's 6-0, 6-2 win over Sladicka at second singles to earn the decisive fourth point. Alphabet finished her day with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Kunz in third-singles action, and junior Kennedy Alexis also got into the win column with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Genzone in their sixth-singles match.

The Garnet Chargers will get back into Liberty League play tomorrow, taking on #33 Vassar College in a key conference clash beginning at 10 a.m. at the Union Tennis Courts.
