SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The #39 Union College women's tennis team continued its challenging final stretch of the regular season on Wednesday afternoon, falling to #21 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute by a 6-1 score in Liberty League action at the Union Tennis Courts.
The loss does not hurt Union (11-5, 4-2 Liberty League) in the race for postseason positioning, as the Garnet Chargers are already assured of a top-four seed in next weekend's Liberty League Tournament. Rensselaer (11-2, 7-0 Liberty League) keeps its hold on the conference's top spot secure with its eighth straight win.
The home team had its chances to take at least one of the three doubles matches, but the Engineers battled back at the second flight to complete the sweep and take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
Union earned one win at the top singles flight, where junior
Chara Meidani picked up a victory after Lorna Flores Gonzalez retired following a 6-3 opening set. Classmate
Claire Langille came a break short in both sets against Victoria Sarabosing at the fifth flight, falling by a 7-5, 6-4 score. At third singles, fellow junior
Sydney Alphabet also put up a good fight after falling 6-0 in the first set to Anushka Jaiswal, battling back from 2-5 down and shaking off a match point to force a tiebreaker before falling by a 7-6 (7-3) margin.
Union will finish off the road portion of its regular-season slate on Saturday with a 3 p.m. matchup at Rochester Institute of Technology.
