ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The #39 Union College women's tennis team broke the program single-season wins record for the second straight year by earning its 12th victory of the season with a 5-2 win over Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon at the Midtown Athletic Club.
Union (12-5, 5-2 Liberty League) also matched the program record for conference wins in a season with one match remaining. Currently in fourth place in the conference standings, Union could move up to third with a win over #38 Skidmore College in tomorrow's regular-season finale.
Juniors
Claire Langille and
Sydney Alphabet and first-year
Calista Finkelstein were all double winners for Union on the day, playing a role in five of the team's six wins.
Starting the day in doubles, Alphabet and Finkelstein picked up a 6-2 third-flight win over Anika Galkiewicz and Gabriella Donohue to even up the score before Langille teamed with classmate
Skylar Semon with a hard-fought 7-5 second-doubles victory over Emily Greb and Abby Murray, coming back from 3-5 down to win the last four games and earn the doubles point for the visitors.
Alphabet gave Union its second point with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Murray at fourth singles, and sophomore
Luisa Arizpe-Sierra outlasted Melanie Saborio in a second-set tiebreaker to pull the visitors within a point of victory with a 6-1, 7-6 (11-9) win at third singles.
Finkelstein and Langille secured the victory with dominant performances at the bottom two flights, with both players dropping only one game. Finkelstein lost the first game to Donohue before rattling off 12 straight in a 6-1, 6-0 fifth-singles victory, while Langille swept the first set and won the final five games of the second in a 6-0, 6-1 sixth-singles win over Galkiewicz.
Union will close out the regular season tomorrow at 11 a.m., as the team celebrates Senior Day before a matchup against Skidmore at the Union Tennis Courts.
