Box Score SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The #39 Union College women's tennis team wrapped up the most successful regular season in program history on Sunday afternoon, falling to #38 Skidmore College by a 7-0 score in Liberty League action at Sportime Schenectady.
The loss locks Union (12-6, 5-3 Liberty League) into the fourth spot in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament, giving the team a familiar first-round matchup with St. Lawrence University. Skidmore (9-9, 7-1 Liberty League) finishes the regular season in a three-way tie for first place with RPI and Vassar and wins the tiebreaker to earn the top seed.
All three doubles matches were competitive to start the day, with two of the three matchups decided by a single break. A late break provided the difference at the top flight, as juniors
Kennedy Alexis and
Chara Meidani dropped a 6-4 match to Grace Truong and Konika Dhull. A break at 5-5 gave the Thoroughbreds an edge at third doubles as well, as Colette Prokop and Beilynn Geiss outlasted junior
Sydney Alphabet and first-year
Calista Finkelstein by a 7-5 margin.
Skidmore swept all six singles matches to finish off the victory. Sophomore
Luisa Arizpe-Sierra almost prevented the shutout at fourth singles, coming back from a set down to force a supertiebreaker against Mia Sarzynska. She was unable to finish off the comeback, however, falling by a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) score.
Union will begin play in the Liberty League Tournament on Friday against St. Lawrence in Ithaca. Check UnionAthletics.com next week for a full postseason preview.
