CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. - Union softball rolled past Russell Sage to earn a 8-2 non-conference win Tuesday evening at Clifton Commons Park.
First-year Carra Cleaves delivered another stellar performance on the mound, pitching all seven innings, striking out eight, and allowing just three hits and two earned runs.
Sophomore Maddy Ewald led the offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Senior Riley Callahan went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run. First-year Amy FitzPatrick added a hit and drove in two RBIs, finishing 1-for-4 at the plate. Junior Ellie Wintringer also contributed, going 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
After a quiet first inning, Union found their momentum in the second, scoring five runs. FitzPatrick singled to drive in Cleaves and Wintringer, while Ewald followed with an RBI single that brought home sophomore Sophia Burynski. Callahan capped the inning with a two-RBI single, scoring Ewald and FitzPatrick.
Union added a run in both the third and fourth innings. In the third, Ewald singled to bring in Cleaves. In the fourth, Wintringer scored on a sacrifice fly by first-year Kyla Springer.
The Gators got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the fifth off a single, but Union responded in the sixth as Springer doubled to drive in Callahan, sealing an 8–2 victory over Russell Sage.
The Garnet Chargers close out the regular season and celebrate Senior Day on Saturday in a conference doubleheader against the University of Rochester. The first pitches are set for 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.
