GENEVA, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team increased its winning streak to a season-high four matches and remained unbeaten in Liberty League play with a 7-0 victory over William Smith College on Sunday at Bristol Fieldhouse.
Juniors
Claire Langille,
Chara Meidani and
Skylar Semon were all double winners on the day, playing a role in four of the team's seven points. The win keeps Union (9-3, 3-0 Liberty League) unbeaten in conference play and moves the team to six matches over .500 for the first time in a season since 2000 when the team finished the year with a 9-3 mark.
Meidani and classmate
Kennedy Alexis started doubles play with an efficient 6-2 win over Haley Levine and Grace Magna at the top flight. Langille and Semon followed with a 6-4 comeback win over Marin Montagne and Natalie Haythorn at the second flight, battling back from 2-4 down to win the final four games. Three of the final four games were won at deuce in a very close matchup that gave Union the opening point.
First-year
Calista Finkelstein started singles play with a dominating effort against Montagne at the fifth flight, winning by a 6-0, 6-2 score. The first-year dropped only four points in a very efficient opening set, and then broke Montagne twice to start the second set on the way to her 14th singles win of the season.
Langille needed only a few more minutes to earn a win at sixth singles, taking down Bethany Walker, 6-2, 6-1, for her second win of the day. She won five of the first six games in taking the opening frame, and then won the first four of the second on the way to the win.
Semon provided the clinching point at second singles, defeating Levine by a 6-2, 6-3 score, and Meidani finished up her 6-4, 6-1 first-singles victory over Haythorn very soon after to complete undefeated days for both players.
Junior
Sydney Alphabet earned her 10th singles win of the year with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-4 victory over Magna at fourth singles. First-year
Samantha Jacobs' third-singles match versus Mae Kellersman was the last to start and she closed the day with a 6-3, 6-1 victory to complete the sweep with her team-leading 16th singles win of the season.
The Garnet Chargers will look to increase their winning streak to five with the team's final non-conference matchup of the regular season on Tuesday against SUNY New Paltz at the Union Tennis Courts.
