Men's Lacrosse Has Four Earn All-Liberty League Honors

TROY, N.Y. – Four members of the Union College men's lacrosse team were named to the All-Liberty League teams by the conference's head coaches, the Liberty League announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Junior John Sula earned All-Liberty League first-team honors for the second straight season, while senior Patrick Reilly was named to the All-Conference second team. Both senior Luke McHugh and sophomore Nick Lynch earned honorable mention recognition as well.

Sula is back on the first team for the second year in a row after another solid season in the midfield for the Garnet Chargers. The long-stick middie ranked third on the team with 41 ground balls and caused 14 turnovers to finish second on the squad, while also scoring a career-high two goals with two assists for four points. The junior recorded at least one ground ball in every game this season, including a career-high seven against Vassar, and also caused a career-best four turnovers at Ithaca. With a season still to go, Sula is Union's active leader with 144 career ground balls, placing him 13th on the school's all-time list.

Reilly earned All-Conference honors for the second straight season, ranking second on the team with 46 ground balls and adding nine caused turnovers as a key member of the faceoff unit and defensive midfield. He picked up at least one ground ball in every game over the last two seasons for Union, including a career-best seven in the season-opener at #20 Babson and six versus Williams. In three seasons on the field for the Garnet Chargers, Reilly corralled 124 ground balls and caused 25 turnovers while scoring four goals with four assists for eight points.

McHugh made the most of his first season as the team's primary faceoff specialist, winning 61.4 percent (180 of 293) of his draws and grabbing a team-leading 108 ground balls to become only the fifth player in program history to record 100 grounders in a season. He finished the season third in the conference in ground balls and faceoff winning percentage, while also ranking 35th and 48th in the country, respectively. The senior also scored two goals with four assists for six points in his final season and finished his career at 59.8 percent at the faceoff X with 131 ground balls in 38 games.

Lynch stepped into the starting role between the pipes and had a good season for Union as a sophomore, posting a .592 save percentage and 11.81 goals against average in 12 starts. The sophomore led the conference and ranked 12th nationally by averaging 16.7 saves per game, including a stretch of three straight 20-plus save outings, and also ranked 17th in Division III in save percentage. He was named to the USILA D-III Team of the Week after making 21 saves in back-to-back outings against Muhlenberg and #18/16 Middlebury, and then stopped a career-high 22 shots the next time out in an upset win over #9 Stevens.

Union finished the season with a 4-10 record in one of the toughest conferences in Division III.
