SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Worcester Polytechnic Institute in its season opener Friday evening at College Park Field.

The Garnet Chargers controlled much of the first half, recording three shots and nearly breaking through with a golden opportunity in the 31st minute. However, the teams entered halftime scoreless.

Union generated early pressure in the second half, but the Engineers found their rhythm and broke through in the 68th minute. Maeve Steckley sent a cross into the box, where Reese Pszenny one-touched it past Union's goalkeeper to give WPI the lead.

The Garnet Chargers created two more quality chances in the final minutes, but were unable to convert, and the Engineers held on for the 1-0 victory. 

Union returns to action non-conference action Tuesday hosting Smith College. Kick off is set for 5:00 p.m.
