Jorgensen's Quick Strike Leads Women's Soccer Past Smith 1-0

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior Vanessa Jorgensen scored the lone goal of the match while senior goalkeeper Rachel Berliner made several key saves to lead the Union College woimen's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Smith College on Tuesday afternoon at College Park Field.

Union (1-1) set the tone early, as Berliner made the game's first save and the defense held strong, shutting down the rest of Smith's scoring threats.

The defensive momentum carried into the offensive zone as Union created several strong chances and capitalized in the 21st minute. Just 18 seconds after coming into the game as a substitute, Jorgensen found herself open at the back post after senior Anabelle Thomas took a pass from junior Taylor Bovardi and sent it across the goal mouth for the senior to put away her first goal of the year.

In the second half, Union increased their offensive momentum, spending 59 percent of the half in the offensive zone and generating 12 shots, including six key chances on net, while holding the Bears without a single shot attempt.

Berliner played the full 90 minutes, registering three total saves, while Smith's goaltender, Sky Smith, tallied seven saves.

The Garnet Chargers return to action Saturday at College Park Field as they host Babson College. Kick off is set for 4:00 pm.
