Field Hockey Comes Up Just Short to #10 Wesleyan in OT

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College field hockey team took #10 Wesleyan University to overtime in a thrilling back-and-forth battle, but the Cardinals got the game-winning goal with 1:05 left in the first extra frame to escape with a 2-1 (OT) win over the Garnet Chargers on Wednesday evening at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

In a battle between two evenly-matched teams, Wesleyan's Georgia Adams took a long pass from Emily Smith and deked past Union sophomore goalie Tess Parker before depositing the ball into an empty net for the game-winner in the final seconds of the 69th minute.

The goal finished a scoreless stretch of more than 60 minutes after both teams found the net early. The visitors got on the board first 5:01 into the contest, but Union came back just over a minute later on junior Reese Fendelet's third tally of the year. Off a corner insert to senior Megan Dorsey, the ball was dished off to sophomore Bobbi Serino, whose pass into the middle was deflected high into the net by Fendelet.

The teams continued to generate offensive chances after that, but Parker and her counterpart Audrey Pace combined to keep the game tied through the end of regulation. Parker finished with eight saves and was helped by defensive saves from sophomores Aislin Devaney and Rowan Dapson, while Pace stopped six shots on the night.

Sophomore Maddie Greco had a team-leading three shots for Union, while the defensive corps of Devaney, Dapson, junior Amelia Stevens, first-year Macy Goodwin, and senior Kat Bruun asserted themselves very well throughout the night in continually stymying the Wesleyan attack.

Union will look to bounce back on Saturday with another nationally ranked battle against #23 Massachusetts Institute of Technology beginning at 2 p.m. in Cambridge.
