Field Hockey Drops Another OT Heartbreaker to #23 MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the second straight game, the Union College field hockey team took a nationally ranked opponent to overtime, but the Garnet Chargers again came out on the wrong side in a tough 3-2 (OT) loss to #23 Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon at Jack Barry Field.

Senior Megan Dorsey and junior Molly Halliday scored goals and junior Maddie Greco picked up a pair of assists for Union (3-3), which outshot the Engineers by a 13-9 margin and held a 7-2 edge in penalty corners. With her two assists, Greco moved past Kristin Murphy '06 into fourth place on the school's career scoring list.

Union took the game to MIT (3-3) in the opening period, taking the frame's only five shots and forcing goalie Maeve Zimmer to make four saves to keep her team in the game early.

Despite the strong start, the home team outscored the visitors 2-1 in the second stanza to take a lead into halftime. Jane Tortorella put MIT up 1-0 in the 20th minute on the team's first shot of the game, but Union had a quick response as Dorsey netted her second of the year less than two minutes later to even the score at one. Both goals came off penalty corners. The Engineers managed to retake the lead late in the half on a Sammi Blocher goal with 2:46 on the clock.

Union came out of the half and again had the better of play, holding a 3-1 edge in shots, but the game remained 2-1 heading into the fourth. The team earned three penalty corners in the first five-plus minutes of the fourth and that pressure finally yielded results when Halliday scored her first of the season to knot the score with 9:16 remaining in regulation.

Unfortunately for the visitors, the overtime period produced only one shot, coming off the stick of Sierra Kim 2:16 into the extra session that beat sophomore Tess Parker to give MIT the win.

Parker finished the game with five saves for Union, while Zimmer turned aside eight shots to earn the win for MIT.

Union will continue non-conference play with a Wednesday evening game against Ramapo College of New Jersey set to begin at 6 p.m. in Schenectady.
