SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Juniors
Maddie Greco and
Reese Fendelet both recorded hat tricks to lead the Union College field hockey team its highest-scoring outing in over 18 years, as the Garnet Chargers dispatched Ramapo College of New Jersey by a 10-1 score on Wednesday evening at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
Greco and Fendelet both scored three goals for the second time in their careers in the victory, which saw five players score and nine players record at least one point. First-year
Ellie Innes scored twice while sophomore
Katie Radzik and first-year
Lily Durivage found the net once each as well for Union (4-3), which scored the most goals in a game since a 13-0 victory over Regis College on September 8, 2007. The 10 goals mark the fourth time in program history that Union has reached double figures and the third time that 10 goals were scored in a game.
The home team wasted little time getting going on Wednesday, as Greco scored on the team's first shot of the game to put Union ahead 3:14 into the contest. The junior struck again 3:24 later by tipping home a pass from sophomore
Bobbi Serino to record her 12th career multi-goal game and double the Union lead. Innes made it a three-goal lead just 2:07 after that off one of first-year
Katelyn Birnbaum's two assists, but Ramapo got one back less than a minute later on a rocket from the top of the arc by Victoria Chavez.
It was all Union after that, however, as the home team scored the final seven goals of the game. Fendelet scored twice in 2:13 to give the Garnet Chargers a 5-1 edge at the half, scoring an unassisted tally in the 24th minute and then converting a Birnbaum pass in the 26th minute.
Greco and Fendelet both finished off their hat tricks in the third period, with Greco scoring 83 seconds into the frame and Fendelet tipping home a shot by sophomore
Rowan Dapson at the 6:44 mark of the third. Durivage netted her second of the season off a feed by senior
Megan Dorsey with 2:49 remaining in the period to send Union into the fourth up by seven.
The home team only took four shots in the final period, but still managed to score twice. Radzik added her name to the ledger with her first of the year at the end of the 50th minute, picking up a rebound and slotting it home. Innes put a pretty exclamation point on the night with 5:58 remaining, picking the top corner for her second of the night and sixth of the year.
The Garnet Chargers finished the evening with a commanding 29-5 edge in shots. Sophomore
Tess Parker and senior
Sophie Brady split time in goal for the home team, with Brady needing to make the only save for Union on the night. Ramapo keepers Emily Getz and Sam Fried combined for 13 stops.
Union will return to action on Saturday, when the team welcomes William Paterson University to Frank Bailey Field for a 5 p.m. matchup.
