Garnet Chargers Start League Play with 6-1 Win at Bard

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team started off Liberty League play with a 6-1 victory over Bard College on Tuesday evening at the Stevenson Courts.

First-years Megan McCusker and Jenny Park both did not lose a game in either singles or doubles play on the evening, leading five Garnet Chargers with two wins apiece for Union (1-0, 1-0 Liberty League) in its first dual match of the season.

Union started strong in doubles play, dropping only one game in the three matches. Senior Sydney Alphabet and sophomore Calista Finkelstein defeated Paige Houghton and Maria Castro at the top flight by a 6-0 score, while Union's senior and first-year tandems both swept at the bottom two flights. Senior Claire Langille and McCusker won at the second flight over Isa Santos and Catherine Chapel while senior Skylar Semon and Park won six straight against Jesse Radzik and Lisa Krytoka.

Moving into singles play, Park finished off her perfect day in quick fashion with a double-bagel win over Sienna Roveda at the sixth flight, followed soon after by Finkelstein's 6-0, 6-1 win at second singles over Houghton. McCusker clinched the match and her flawless evening a minute later by sweeping Santos at the third flight, and Langille ended up just one game over the minimum with a 6-0, 6-1 fourth-singles win over Chapel.

Alphabet picked up Union's last point of the night with a pair of 6-2 sets over Radzik in fifth-singles action, while Bard avoided the sweep thanks to Castro's 6-4, 6-4 win at first singles over Semon.

Union will be back in action next weekend at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships, set for September 26-28 in Saratoga Springs.
