SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Three members of the Union College women's tennis team earned first-round wins on day one of the ITA Northeast Regional Championships, held on Friday at Skidmore College's McCaffrey-Wagman Tennis Center.
Union had five players representing the Garnet Chargers in the singles bracket with three coming out with wins on day one.
Senior
Chara Meidani started her weekend with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Lauren Kallas of the University of Rochester, and classmate
Skylar Semon dropped only six games as well with a pair of 6-3 sets to defeat Madeleine Sutro of Ithaca College. First-year
Megan McCusker had a battle against Rochester's Lily Caldwell, splitting the first two sets 6-1 and 2-6, before the rookie took the supertiebreaker by a 10-7 score to join Meidani and Semon in the round of 32. None of the three could make into the round of 16, however; Meidani dropped an 8-5 match to Ananya Krishnan of Vassar College in the top-half of the bracket., while in the bottom half, McCusker fell 8-3 to the College of New Jersey's Zoey Albert and Semon succumbed to conference rival Molly Jespersen of St. Lawrence University, 8-3.
In addition, senior
Claire Langille came a tiebreaker short of forcing a third-set supertiebreaker against William Smith College's Mae Kellersman, falling 6-2, 7-6 (7-3), while sophomore
Calista Finkelstein came up short in a 7-5, 6-1 match against Ellie Lake of Skidmore.
Both Union doubles entries fell to New York University tandems in their opening Round on 32 matches as well. Meidani and classmate
Kennedy Alexis were outlasted by Siona Vallabhaneni and Norah Staunton by an 8-6 score, while Semon and Langille dropped an 8-4 match to Emma Kast and Vera Bondarenko.
Union will be back in action tomorrow on Saturday's second day of ITA Regional competition.
