Harchetts Earns 100th Win as Union Cruises Past William Paterson

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior Amy Vytopilova recorded a game-high five points to lead four Union College players scored two goals each as the Garnet Chargers delivered head coach Kelly Harchetts her 100th career victory on the sidelines in Saturday's 10-1 win over William Paterson University at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

Harchetts, who is in her 14th season as head of the Union field hockey program, became the second coach in program history to reach the century mark and sits four wins away from tying Charlyn Robert for the most wins in Union field hockey annals.

Harchetts was not the only Garnet Charger to make some history on Saturday. Senior goalie Sophie Brady earned her 30th win in goal for Union, matching Jen Lyon '90 for the most in program history. Junior Maddie Greco scored twice to vault into second place at Union with 92 career points, while senior Megan Dorsey had a goal and an assist to move into 10th place in career points (63) at Union.

Greco was one of four Union players to score twice on the day, along with Vytopilova, junior Reese Fendelet and first-year Katelyn Birnbaum. Dorsey and sophomore Maggie Monaghan both scored as well and sophomore Bobbi Serino had two points with a pair of assists.

Union dominated William Paterson to the tune of a 25-3 shot advantage and a 13-1 edge in penalty corners. The home team outscored the visitors 7-0 in the first half and cruised the rest of the way.

Fendelet wasted little time scoring her two goals, netting a pair in the span of 27 seconds early in the first. She opened the scoring 68 seconds into the game, corralling a ball from Dorsey and scoring through traffic. She doubled the lead soon after with her second of the game and eighth of the year at the 1:49 mark. Greco completed the opening blitz with her first of the game 2:44 into the contest to quickly put the game out of reach.

The home team struck quickly for three more early in the second period, beginning with a penalty stroke tally from Birnbaum 52 seconds in. Vytopilova scored in the 18th minute and Greco followed in the 19th by tipping home a Serino pass to make it a six-goal edge. Birnbaum added her second of the frame with 5:49 remaining to put Union up by seven after 30 minutes.

The teams combined for only three shots in the third period, with William Paterson getting a goal from Sofia Russell to avoid the shutout. But Union returned to form in the fourth with seven unanswered shots and three more goals. Vytopilova netted her second from Serino with 9:35 left, followed 2:21 later by a Dorsey strike from the penalty spot. Monaghan put an exclamation point on the game with by roofing home a penalty corner insert from first-year Ellie Innes in the 55th minute.

Union will return to action on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. matchup at Hartwick College.
