SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Union College women's soccer team fell 2–1 to #13 Middlebury in a hard-fought battle on Wednesday afternoon at South Street Field.
The Garnet Chargers (3-2-1) were quick to score just five minutes into the game. Senior Anabelle Thomas controlled the ball off of a failed Middlebury clearing attempt, and fired a shot into the top left corner of the net.
However, Middlebury (5-0-1) responded in the 34th minute off a corner kick, when the ball deflected off the chest of Kacy Walker and into the left corner of the net to tie the game.
For the last 10 minutes of play in the half, neither team recorded a shot on goal, and entered halftime tied at one.
In the second half, Middlebury scored the go ahead goal five minutes in. A nice cross from Mia Feldman allowed Walker to take a point blank shot from just outside the goalkeeper's box into the left side of the net.
With 17 minutes remaining, junior goalkeeper Maya Koster made a brilliant diving save to keep the deficit at one. The Garnet Chargers generated one final shot on target in the second half in search of the equalizer, but couldn't convert, and Middlebury held on for the 2–1 win.
Koster played the full 90 minutes for Union, recording five saves on the afternoon.
Union returns to action on Saturday for their Senior Day game against SUNY Oneonta to celebrate their seven seniors: Rachel Berliner, Grace Beazoglou, Alayna Boileau, Anabelle Thomas, Vanessa Jorgensen, Sophia Surber, and Anne Pearl. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
