Field Hockey Can't Put Away Hartwick, Falls in Overtime

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Union College field hockey team controlled the game for much of the evening, but the Garnet Chargers allowed Hartwick College to stick around and the hosts eventually pulled out a 2-1 (OT) victory over Union in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.

Junior Maddie Greco scored the lone goal of the game for Union (5-4), reaching the 10-goal plateau for the third straight season and becoming the second player in program history to score 10 or more goals in three different years. At the other end of the field, senior Sophie Brady made six saves in goal for the Garnet Chargers.

Union had the better of play for much of the opening 30 minutes, but the Garnet Chargers could not find the net despite a 14-4 edge in shots. Hartwick goalie Lexi Cheeseman turned aside 11 shots to keep the game scoreless, while Brady stopped all four on-target shots she faced in the opening half as well. The visitors outshot the home team by a 10-1 margin in the second stanza, but could not create any distance.

The visitors finally broke through in the 35th minute, when Greco weaved through traffic to net an unassisted tally that put Union in front. Union continued to put pressure on the Hartwick defense, earning five penalty corners and limiting the Hawks to one corner and one shot, but it remained a one-goal advantage headed to the fourth.

The Hawks were rewarded for staying close early in the fourth, when Katelyn Klotz converted on a penalty stroke to knot the score at one 2:59 into the period. Union did not record a shot the rest of the way and the game headed to overtime. There, Hartwick earned the first penalty corner opportunity and Hope Angioletti found the net from the top of the circle to give the Hawks the win.

The Garnet Chargers will look to rebound on Saturday, when the team hosts #22 Ithaca College in their Liberty League opener beginning at 1 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
