SCRANTON, Pa. – The Union College women's volleyball team wrapped up play in the other Electric City this weekend with two matches at the Scranton Invitational, falling to Eastern University by a 3-0 score and the host Royals by a 3-1 margin on Saturday afternoon at the John Long Center.
Sophomore
Georgia Pinciaro led Union (8-6) with 23 kills on the day to earn All-Tournament team honors. Senior
Georgia Pool was all over the court with 44 digs in seven sets and sophomore
Allie Kronenberg recorded 59 assists on the afternoon.
Eastern 3, Union 0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-12)
Pinciaro had a team-best 10 kills in Saturday's first match of the day, followed by sophomore
Kayla Martinez Cartagena with six. Pool had a match-high 21 digs. The Garnet Chargers struggled to get balls to the floor on the match, hitting .087 compared to .302 for Eastern.
After Eastern led almost start-to-finish in the opening set, Union had an opening to even the match in the second. A 7-2 run put the Garnet Chargers up 21-19, but the Eagles closed on a 6-1 run of their own to take a commanding two-set lead. Eastern followed up by earning 13 of the third set's first 15 points on the way to the sweep.
Scranton 3, Union 1 (25-14, 25-20, 28-30, 25-11)
Pinciaro again led the visitors with 13 kills against the Royals, while first-year
Shea Ringel put down 10 kills and sophomore
Melody Herrin hit a team-best .412 with eight kills on 17 attempts. Union again struggled at the net, hitting .099 and allowing Scranton to finish the day at .331.
Scranton ended the first set on a 9-2 run to grab the early advantage. The Garnet Chargers jumped out to an 8-3 lead to start the second stanza, but the Royals responded with a 10-1 run to take back the advantage. The visitors got back within a point on four occasions, but could never get back to even the rest of the way to fall into a two-set hole.
Union battled to stay alive in the third set, rebounding from six missed set points to finally extend the match. The visitors led 24-22 after a Ringel kill, but three straight Scranton points kept the home team alive. Three kills by Pinciaro set up more set points but Union could not convert before an attack error staved off a Scranton match point at 28-27. Another Royal error gave Union its seventh set point and Ringel came up with an ace to finally end the frame.
Union could not capitalize on that momentum, however, as Scranton scored 14 of the fourth set's first 17 points to quickly create distance on the way to the win.
The Garnet Chargers will be back in action on Wednesday with a non-conference match at SUNY Delhi beginning at 7 p.m.
