SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Four players scored two goals apiece and the Union College field hockey team dominated play for the full 60 minutes in a 9-0 win over Russell Sage College on Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
First-years
Ellie Innes and
Katelyn Birnbaum led the way for Union (3-1) with five points apiece, with both players scoring two goals and adding an assist. Juniors
Maddie Greco and
Rachel Ostiguy both found the net two times each and first-year
Lily Durivage scored as well for the home team.
Combined with yesterday's 8-1 win at SUNY Morrisville, the team's 17 goals are the second-most over a two-game span in program history and most since back-to-back 8-1 and 10-0 wins over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute way back in 1978.
Union was in complete control from the opening whistle, keeping Russell Sage (0-1) without a shot while firing 33 unanswered attempts on the goal of Olivia Brand, who made 14 saves in a strong effort for the visitors. Greco opened the scoring 2:07 into the contest with an unassisted tally, followed by Durivage's first collegiate goal 1:18 later to give the home team a 2-0 edge after one period.
Three more goals came Union's way in the second stanza, beginning with Greco finishing off her shortened day of work with her second of the afternoon off a pass from junior
Molly Halliday. Ostiguy picked up her first of the year off a scramble in front, with the assist going to Birnbaum. In the final stages of the frame it was Birnbaum's turn to score, netting her first collegiate tally by finishing off a two-on-one with Innes with 20 seconds left.
Ostiguy made it a 6-0 lead 6:47 into the third period by tipping home a shot from sophomore
Aislin Devaney, giving the sophomore her first collegiate point. Innes followed up with the next two goals, with sophomore
Francesca Sullivan recording an assist on the second tally for her first collegiate point. Birnbaum finished up the scoring with 5:08 remaining and Union did not attempt a shot the rest of the way.
Union will be back on Frank Bailey Field on Wednesday against another nationally ranked NESCAC opponent when the Garnet Chargers host Wesleyan University at 6 p.m.
