POTSDAM, N.Y. - #11/12 Clarkson defeated the Union College Women's Hockey team, 5–1, on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.
Karianne Engelbert scored the lone goal for Union on the power play, assisted by junior
Maddie Leaney and senior captain
Stephanie Bourque. With the assists, Bourque is now two points shy while Leaney is five points shy of breaking the program's all-time points record of 68, currently held by Elise Nichols '07.
Nearly three minutes into the first period, the Garnet Chargers skated five-on-four after an Union individual player was penalized for both tripping and roughing, while Clarkson also received an embellishment penalty. Union killed the tripping penalty to return to even strength.
Clarkson opened the scoring midway through the first period when Sena Catterall fired a shot off the right post and into the net, giving the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead. The Garnet Chargers responded just two minutes later. Clarkson was whistled for interference and, a minute and a half later, took another penalty for tripping. While the Golden Knights killed off the first penalty, Union capitalized on five versus four. Bourque passed to Leaney at the far left hash marks, who then found Engelbert in the slot. Engelbert buried the shot into the right side of the net to tie the game at one.
Clarkson regained the lead a minute and a half later as Sara Manness scored on a shot from inside the slot, putting the Golden Knights ahead 2-1. The first period ended with Union on the penalty kill, but Clarkson was unable to extend their lead.
Union began the second period on a power play, generating strong scoring chances, but could not convert. Minutes later, Clarkson answered with their third goal of the night when Manon Le Scodan scored on a shot from the slot, giving Clarkson a 3-1 advantage. Late in the period, Union was assessed a slashing minor and a 10-minute misconduct, resulting in a Clarkson power play. The Golden Knights had several scoring chances but could not add to their lead. Partway through the power play, Clarkson took a two-minute high-sticking penalty, ending their advantage. Union then served a brief power play before all penalties expired but were unable to convert.
In the third period, Union earned another power play with five minutes remaining but were unable to capitalize. With just over two minutes left in regulation, Union pulled goalie
Emma Rhéaume for an extra attacker. However, Clarkson's Kate Manness scored into the empty netter to make it 4-1. Rhéaume was put back into the net. Shortly after, Union took a tripping penalty with a minute to go, and Manon Le Scodan scored on a rebound, sealing the 5-1 victory for Clarkson. Rhéaume finished with 27 saves.
Union returns to action next Saturday playing in the eighth annual Mayor's Cup against cross-town rival Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Puck drop is set for 3:00 p.m. at MVP Arena in Albany, NY.
