Men’s Hockey Shut Out on the Road

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Union College men's hockey team was shut out by Harvard University on Monday afternoon at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center.

Harvard (10-7-1, 8-4-0 ECAC Hockey) scored in all three periods, finishing with four goals on the night. The Garnet Chargers (14-8-2, 5-7-1 ECAC Hockey) were held out of the back of the net for the first time this season. As the only game on the docket Monday across the league, Union remained in seventh place in the ECAC Hockey standings with 17 points, while Harvard jumped up to third place (24 points).

Despite playing their third game in four days, the Garnet Chargers came out dominating the opening minutes of play. Union put six shots on goal before Harvard was able to line up its first. 

The Crimson's first shot came with 33 seconds left in their first power play, but first-year Brayden Gillespie was able to parry it away with his blocker. 

Both teams finished the first period with 10 shots on goal, but Ben Charette made one more save than Gillespie in the opening 20, and Harvard took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Union killed off another penalty early in the second, conceding only one shot. The Garnet Chargers held their own while reduced on the ice throughout the game, improving their second-ranked penalty kill to 91.5%. However, Harvard held serve with its top-ranked penalty-kill unit. Harvard killed off Union's only power-play chance of the game, which came with Union trailing 2-0 early in the third.

Union outshot Harvard by six in the third period, but Harvard converted on two of its seven shots in the final stanza to earn a 4-0 victory and its first shutout of the season. Union had not been shut out in 37 games, dating back to Jan. 17, 2025 against Dartmouth. The Garnet Chargers had not been shut out on the road since a 0-0 tie against Yale on Jan. 14, 2023. 

Gillespie finished the night with 20 saves, and Union blocked 13 shots in front of him. Senior Nate Hanley blocked a career-high four shots. 

Union was held under 30 shots for only the fourth time this season. Junior Tyler Dunbar led the team with four looks on net, and senior Colby MacArthur and sophomore Will Felicio both had three. MacArthur played in his 100th collegiate game on Monday and became the fourth active Garnet Charger to suit up for triple-digit contests. 

Union looks to win the Mayors' Cup against Rensselaer for the fifth time in a row when the Garnet Chargers take on the Engineers. Faceoff for the regional rivalry is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. at MVP Arena in Albany, N.Y.
