PROVIDENCE, RI – The Union College team suffered a 3-1 loss to #15 Brown University on Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium.
Senior captain
Stephanie Bourque netted the only goal for the Garnet Chargers in the first period, with first-year
Megan Duplantie and junior
Maddie Leaney picking up the assists.
Bourque opened the scoring midway through the first period on the power play, blasting a shot from the high slot through traffic into the back of the net to give Union a 1-0 lead.
Soon after, Union was assessed a penalty, but Brown did not capitalize on the power play.
The Bears ended the period with a 16-8 advantage in shots on goal.
Just five minutes into the second period, Brown tied the game when Sam Broz tipped in a shot from Margot Norehead.
Brown then took the lead with just under a minute remaining in the middle frame as Gaily Levy converted on a two-on-one opportunity, making it 2-1.
In the third period, Brown sealed the victory with less than five minutes left. Monique Lyons set up Norehead for a goal in front of the net to make it 3-1.
Union pulled junior goaltender
Monja Wagner with 1:23 left, hoping to spark a comeback. However, a penalty drawn by Union a minute later sent Wagner back into the net, and Brown got the power play, but no further goals were scored. Wagner finished the game with 51 saves.
Union returns home next weekend hosting #9 Princeton University and #8 Quinnipiac University at M&T Bank Center. Puck drop against the Tigers is set for 6:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by a 3:00 p.m. puck drop with the Bobcats on Saturday afternoon.
