SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Union College Women's Hockey team came up short in a 3–1 loss to #9 Princeton on Friday night at M&T Bank Center.
First-year
Reanna Loberg scored the lone goal for the Garnet Chargers on the power play, with junior
Quinn Dunkle picking up the assist.
Princeton opened the scoring midway through the first period, as Issy Wunder found the back of the net on a breakaway opportunity to give the Tigers a 1–0 lead.
However, a five-minute major penalty assessed to Princeton a minute later allowed Union to respond. Dunkle skated to the bottom of the right circle and fired an odd-angle shot on net, and Loberg collected the rebound and tapped it home to tie the game at one.
Princeton regained the lead with three minutes remaining in the first period, as Jane Khruel fired a shot from the bottom of the left circle and Katherine Khramstov tipped the rebound into the net.
Union started the second period on the power play but took a penalty of its own to bring play to four-on-four. After skating four aside, the Garnet Chargers killed off the remainder of the penalty and returned to full strength at 5:18 of the period.
Just 25 seconds later, Wunder scored her second goal of the night, knocking in the rebound off her initial shot to extend the Tigers' lead to 3-1.
Both teams earned a power-play opportunity later in the middle frame, but neither side capitalized.
Union killed off two penalties in the third period and earned a late power play with 1:49 remaining in regulation. The Garnet Chargers skated six-on-four on the power play after pulling goaltender
Monja Wagner searching for two goals to force overtime, but came up short. Wagner finished the night with 38 saves.
Union wraps up the weekend tomorrow against #7 Quinnipiac at 3:00 p.m. at M&T Bank Center.
