SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College Women's Hockey team fell in a 5–2 decision to #10 Yale on Saturday afternoon during its National Girls and Women in Sports Day game at M&T Bank Center.
Sophomore
Klara Kenttälä opened the scoring for the Garnet Chargers early in the contest, while junior alternate captain
Mallory Mauracher added Union's second goal of the afternoon. Junior
Emma Fulawka and sophomore
Jill Willis earned assists on Kenttälä's tally, while senior
Amanda Quan and sophomore
Giavanna Mancy assisted on Mauracher's goal.
Kenttälä put Union on the board just 3:08 into the first period, finishing a rebound off of Fulawka's initial attempt on goal. The remainder of the opening frame featured tight play, with Union and Yale skating four-on-four late in the period after both teams were assessed roughing penalties. Neither team capitalized, and Yale held a slim 15–12 edge in shots on goal through 20 minutes.
The Bulldogs struck three times in the opening 11 minutes of the second period to take control of the game. Molly Boyle tied the contest at one just over a minute into the middle frame with a wrist shot from inside the blue line. Four minutes later, Jordan Ray converted on a rebound to give Yale a 2–1 lead, before Gracie Gilkyson extended the advantage to 3–1 with a wrist shot with eight minutes remaining in the period.
Union responded quickly, as Mauracher cut the deficit to one just 21 seconds later, pouncing on a loose puck off an awkward bounce in front of the net.
Yale, however, answered with two more goals in the period to secure a 5–2 lead. Sylva Bojarski finished a one-timer two minutes after Mauracher's goal, and DiAntonio added a tally with 19 seconds remaining.
Union earned two power-play opportunities to Yale's one in the third period, but neither team was able to capitalize.
First-year goaltender
Emma Rhéaume made 44 saves in net.
Union returns to action next weekend, traveling to Colgate and #12 Cornell. Puck drop is set for 3:00 p.m. on Friday against the Raiders and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday against the Big Red.
