HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Union College Women's Hockey team dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Colgate University Friday afternoon at Class of 1965 Arena.
Sophomore
Karianne Engelbert opened the game's scoring, scoring the lone goal for the Garnet Chargers with first-year
Megan Duplantie assisting.
Engelbert put Union on the board just 40 seconds into the first period after a Colgate turnover allowed Duplantie to find her in the slot. She deked the Colgate goaltender and tucked the puck inside the right post.
Union successfully killed off a penalty at 10:23, but Colgate tied the game at 16:16 as Alexis Petford knocked in a rebound following a flurry of attempts on Union's net. Union ended the first period on a power play but was unable to convert.
In the middle frame, Union earned three power-play opportunities to Colgate's one, but neither team capitalized. Colgate narrowly outshot Union, 13–7.
Union opened the third period with the remaining power play from the first but came up empty.
With two minutes remaining in regulation, Petford netted her second and the game-winning goal, rifling a shot from the top of the left circle into the top-left corner to secure a 2–1 win for Colgate.
First-year goaltender
Emma Rhéaume played a fantastic game, tallying 40 saves in net.
Union returns to action tomorrow, traveling to #12 Cornell for a 3:00 p.m. puck drop at Lynah Rink.
