Women's Hockey Falls 4-2 to #5 Quinnipiac in Home Opener

Schenectady, N.Y. – The Garnet Chargers battled until the final buzzer against No. 5 Quinnipiac on Friday night, but a three goal second-period surge from the Bobcats proved to be the difference as Union fell 4-2 at M&T Bank Center. Junior Karianne Engelbert and first year Madi Gaines found the back of the net for the Chargers. Despite a strong push in the third period, Union couldn't complete the comeback as the team opened ECAC Hockey play with a hard-fought battle against one of the nation's top-ranked teams.

Quinnipiac struck first in the opening period, with Taylor Brueske scoring at the 12:29 mark just as Union returned to full strength following a power play. The Garnet Chargers responded with a determined defensive effort, blocking eight shots in the opening frame to keep the Bobcats' lead to one heading into the second period.

Union came out with renewed energy to start the second, and Engelbert wasted little time getting the Chargers on the scoreboard. Just 1:31 into the period, the junior found the back of the net off assists from Leaney and junior Jill Willis to even the score at 1-1. The assist continued Willis' impressive streak of recording a point in every game this season. The Bobcats answered at 8:08 when Regan Berglund restored their lead. Quinnipiac continued to build momentum, adding goals from Lisa Lindaman at 11:28 and Anabelle Kruzich at 13:37 to take a 4-1 advantage into the third period.

The Garnet Chargers refused to back down, bringing the fight to the Bobcats in the final frame. First year Gaines sparked hope for a comeback at the 9:55 mark, scoring her fourth goal of the season off a feed from fellow first-year Evie Hanson. The connection between the first-years cut Quinnipiac's lead to two and gave Union a late boost as the Chargers continued to push offensively. However, the Bobcats held on through the final minutes to secure the 4-2 victory.

Union will look to bounce back Saturday afternoon as the Garnet Chargers close out their Homecoming and Family Weekend slate against No. 6/7 Princeton. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m. at M&T Bank Center for the team's Breast Cancer Awareness Game. Admission is free, and fans are invited to stay after the game for a postgame skate with the team.
