Women's Hockey Comes Up Short Against #8 Colgate

Box Score HAMILTON, N.Y. – Union (6-4-0, 1-3-0) battled until the final horn against nationally ranked Colgate (8-2-0, 2-0-0) , but the Garnet Chargers ultimately fell 3-1 to the Raiders. Despite an early two-goal deficit, Union fought its way back into the contest behind a goal from Klara Kenttälä and a 41 save performance from sophomore goaltender Emma Rhéaume. The Chargers continued to generate pressure throughout the game, keeping the contest within reach until Colgate secured the victory late in the third period.

The Union College women's hockey team was anchored by Rhéaume's outstanding effort between the pipes, as she turned aside 41 of Colgate's 44 shots on goal to establish a new career high, surpassing her previous mark of 39 saves set last season in Hamilton. Kenttälä provided the Chargers' offensive spark, finding the back of the net with a top-shelf shot in the first period to cut into the Raiders' lead. Despite the loss, the Garnet Chargers showcased their resilience against a strong Colgate squad, continuing to battle on both ends of the ice.

Colgate opened the scoring at the 3:03 mark of the first period when Taylor Senecal found space behind the Union defense and slipped the puck past Rhéaume to give the Raiders an early 1-0 advantage. Colgate doubled its lead shortly after, as Emma Pais beat Rhéaume with a shot that slipped past the sophomore goaltender's knees to make it a 2-0 game. The Union College women's hockey team responded at the 11:29 mark. Kenttälä delivered a beautiful top-shelf shot, finding the back of the net to put Union on the board and cut the deficit to one. The goal gave the Chargers a much-needed offensive spark as they headed into the first intermission trailing 2-1.

Union carried that momentum into the second period, staying on Colgate's heels while Rhéaume continued to shine between the pipes. The sophomore recorded nine saves in the frame, coming up with several impressive stops, including full-body blocks to keep the puck out of the net. Even amid the chaos in front of the crease, she remained composed and collected, making key saves to prevent the Raiders from extending their lead. The Union College women's hockey team entered the final 20 minutes trailing by one, looking to generate more offensive pressure against a quick and aggressive Colgate defense.

The Garnet Chargers continued to battle until the final seconds of the third period, generating pressure in front of the net but ultimately unable to find the equalizer. Rhéaume continued her impressive performance, turning aside shot after shot as Colgate pressed to extend its advantage. With time winding down, Union searched for one final opportunity to get back into the game. The Chargers went on their fifth power play of the night and pulled Rhéaume at the 1:21 mark, creating a six-on-four skater advantage in hopes of cutting into the deficit. However, Colgate's defense held firm, and Ava Wood sent the puck down the ice to seal the Raiders' 3-1 victory.

Union College women's hockey returns to action Tuesday, Nov. 3, as the Garnet Chargers travel to Troy, N.Y., to take on the RPI Engineers in the Route 7 Rivalry at Houston Field House. The Chargers will then return home for a back-to-back weekend at M&T Bank Center, beginning Friday, Nov. 6, against St. Lawrence University at 6 p.m. Fans in attendance will receive a special koozie giveaway. Union will close out the weekend Saturday, Nov. 7, welcoming No. 10 Clarkson University at 3 p.m. for the annual Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Game.
