#17/18 Men's Hockey Falls 2-1 to St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. – The #17/18 Union College men's hockey team fell on the road against St. Lawrence University 2-1 on Saturday night at Appleton Arena.

After winning their first two conference games of the season, the Garnet Chargers (5-4-0) moved to 2-2-0 in ECAC Hockey after their first loss to St. Lawrence (1-3-1, 1-0-1 ECAC Hockey) since Nov. 5, 2022.

Senior Tyler Dunbar scored on the power play early in the second period to cut the deficit to one, and junior Cameron Korpi made 25 saves in his first start of the season, but Union could not complete the comeback. It is the first time Union has lost back-to-back conference games since late January of last season.

The Saints maintained possession through most of the first period and built its 2-0 lead with goals from Luke Posthumus and Gunnar Thoreson while also outshooting Union 10-7.

Both teams were scoreless on the power play in the opening 20 minutes, but Dunbar converted on the man advantage early in the second after a Saints penalty bled over through the first intermission. Dunbar skated into open ice from the blue line after taking a cross-ice pass from first-year Luke Garry to create his scoring chance. Dunbar's wrister beat Cameron Smith, who ended the evening with 31 saves. Smith had 33 saves the game prior in a shootout win over Rensselaer.

Sophomore Etienne Lessard also assisted on the play, giving him six helpers on the season. Union improved its power-play percentage to 41.9 percent with its 13th goal on the man advantage this season. Dunbar's sixth goal of the year also gives him the second-most goals among defensemen in the country.

The Garnet Chargers outshot St. Lawrence 11-6 in the third period and went with an extra skater for the final 2:04 of regulation. Smith denied all three of Union's final three shots with Korpi on the bench and propelled the Saints to their first win of the season.

The three combined goals on the night between Union and St. Lawrence made Saturday's game the lowest scoring game between the two sides since Jan. 31, 2014.

Union stays on the road for its next two games, beginning with UMass Lowell on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7:15 p.m.
