Harvard Edges Union, 2–1, on Senior Day

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — The Union College Women's Hockey team battled fiercely in a 2–1 loss to Harvard University on Saturday afternoon during its Senior Day at M&T Bank Center.

Seniors Amanda Quan, Greta Kropp, Emily Evans, alternate captain Mallory Mauracher, and captain Stephanie Bourque were honored following their final home game at Union.

Sophomore Klara Kenttälä tallied the lone goal for the Garnet Chargers, with Bourque and first-year Kaitlyn Toner recording assists. Bourque's helper marked a new career high for single-season points, surpassing her previous best of 22 — a total that set the single-season record for a Union defenseman last season.

Kenttälä opened the scoring five minutes into the first period. Bourque sent the puck from the far right side to Kenttälä, who fired a shot from the top of the left circle into the right side of the net to give Union a 1–0 lead.

Harvard evened the score with 1:21 remaining in the opening frame, as Emily Hamann redirected a shot to tie the game at one. Just 45 seconds into the second period, Morgan McGathney buried what proved to be the game-winning goal, giving the Crimson a 2–1 advantage.

The second and third periods featured tight, back-and-forth play, with both teams generating quality scoring chances. Harvard killed off penalties late in the second period and midway through the third to keep Union at bay.

Sophomore Hayley Kelleher had a strong opportunity in front of the net in the third period, while Quan's breakaway attempt midway through the frame was turned aside, but neither chance resulted in the equalizer.

Union pulled Evans with just under four minutes remaining in search of the tying goal but was unable to convert. Evans finished with 25 saves, including several key stops to keep the Garnet Chargers in the game.

Union will travel to the North Country to face #12 Clarkson in the opening round of the ECAC Hockey Playoffs on Friday afternoon. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m.
