POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Union College Women's Hockey team upset #12 (fifth-seeded) Clarkson University on Friday night at Cheel Arena in the opening round of playoffs, earning its second-ever victory against the Golden Knights in program history.
Sophomore
Karianne Engelbert opened the scoring with her eighth power-play goal of the season, breaking Union's single-season record. The goal came on assists from junior
Emma Fulawka and first-year
Megan Duplantie. Duplantie later added Union's second goal, which proved to be the game-winner, assisted by Engelbert and junior
Maddie Leaney.
In the first period, Engelbert struck seven and a half minutes in. Duplantie sent the puck from the far-right hash marks to Fulawka at the goal line. Fulawka's shot rebounded, and Engelbert buried it to give Union a 1–0 lead.
Three minutes later, Duplantie extended the lead to two. Engelbert fed her gliding through the slot, and she chipped the puck into the right side of the net.
Clarkson responded late in the period after Union took a penalty. Janelle Evans rifled a shot from the slot with under two minutes remaining, cutting the deficit to one.
Union earned its second power-play opportunity near the end of the second period but could not convert. Clarkson narrowly outshot Union 11–7 in the frame.
Early in the third period, first-year goaltender Emma Rhéaume made a spectacular save on a tricky bounce. She reached behind her with her glove to keep the puck out of the net to preserve Union's lead.
Clarkson earned its second power play midway through the final frame but Union's defense held strong. Rhéaume recorded 39 saves in net to preserve the 2-1 win for the Garnet Chargers.
Union returns to action on Friday, traveling to #8 Yale University for a best-of-three quarterfinal series against the Bulldogs. Puck drop is set for 3:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by another 3:00 p.m. start on Saturday. A third game, if necessary, will be played on Sunday.
