Garnet Chargers Fall to #24 NYU by 6-1 Score

BRONX, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 match to ITA #24 New York University in a non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon at Stadium Tennis Center.

Sophomore Calista Finkelstein earned the lone win of the day for Union, taking down Aditi Narayan by a 6-4, 6-3 score in a fifth-singles matchup. Finkelstein broke at 3-2 of the first set to gain the advantage and held serve the rest of the way to take the opening frame. She then earned three breaks in a back-and-forth second set, including a key break at love to go up 3-2 and another break to clinch the match.

Despite the loss, senior Chara Meidani put up a good fight at the top flight against ITA #13 Victoria Wang. Only one break separated the pair in a 6-3 first set, and Meidani came back from an early 3-0 hole in the second set to win five of the next six games and take a 5-4 lead. However, Wang fought off a set point at 40-all in the next game and then earned a break to go up 6-5 on the way to the win.

In other matches, senior Skylar Semon fell to Visnja Gusavac at second singles, 6-0, 6-1; first-year Megan McCusker dropped a 6-0, 6-0 match to Sophia Yang at the third flight; senior Claire Langille came up short to fourth-singles opponent Siona Vallabhaneni, 6-1, 6-2; and senior Sydney Alphabet lost a 6-1, 6-2 sixth-singles matchup to Noelle Faber.

Union will return to action on Friday with a 2:30 p.m. match against St. Michael's College at Sportime Capital Region.
