Women's Hockey Suffers Loss to #12 Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. -  The Union College Women's Hockey team suffered a 5-0 loss to #12 Cornell University on Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink.

In the first period, Union earned its first power-play opportunity seven minutes into the game but was unable to convert. Cornell then earned its first power play of the night six minutes later and capitalized, as a blocked shot landed at Georgia Schiff's feet and she knocked the rebound home. Cornell narrowly outshot Union 11–8 in the opening period.

Five seconds into the second period, Union and Cornell skated four-on-four after Union was called for hooking and Cornell for embellishment, but neither team capitalized. Cornell, however, scored its second goal of the night midway through the period, when Avid Adam set up Mackenna Van Gelder in front of the net to tap the puck home and extend the Big Red lead to two.

Cornell added to its lead in the third period, converting on a power play at 7:19 as Piper Grober fired a shot from the slot into the right corner of the net. Two minutes later, the Big Red tallied its fourth goal of the night when Breatice Perron-Roy scored on a two-on-one opportunity.

Cornell later earned a five-on-three advantage after Union was called for two penalties 40 seconds apart but was unable to convert. However, 1:20 later, the Big Red capitalized as Van Gelder netted her second of the night, putting the puck home following a flurry of attempts in front to secure the 5-0 win.

Following the fifth goal, first-year goaltender Emma Rhéaume was pulled, and sophomore Sara Da Silva made her first collegiate appearance, tallying three saves in relief. Rhéaume finished the night with 35 saves.

Women's Hockey concludes its regular season next weekend, opening with a match up against Dartmouth on Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. The weekend wraps up with Senior Day against Harvard at 3:00 p.m., honoring five seniors: Amanda Quan, Greta Kropp, Emily Evans, alternate captain Mallory Mauracher, and captain Stephanie Bourque.
