Baseball Falls 8-3 to Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Sophomore Dylan Swarts hit two doubles and scored twice in the Union College baseball team's 8-3 loss to SUNY Oneonta at Red Dragon Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Swarts' first double came while the Garnet Chargers (2-3) only trailed the Red Dragons (6-3) by two in the top of the third. He and senior Andrew Keaveny produced back-to-back extra-base hits to bring the early deficit down to one. However, Oneonta plated five runs over the next four innings to build a 7-1 lead.

Swarts helped cut back into the Red Dragon lead with another double, leading off the seventh inning with the 18th extra-base hit of his career. Keaveney moved him over, then Swarts scampered home on an errant throw from Oneonta's catcher Matt Sandoval. Swarts' run ended up being earned as he would have scored when the next batter senior Cooper Ames cracked Union's third double of the game.

Nick Jacoby earned that run back in the bottom of the eighth for the home team, homering for his third hit and fourth run of the game. He also walked twice.

The Garnet Chargers sent five batters to the plate during their last chance at bat with Ames scoring on an error by Oneonta's shortstop. However, Oneonta's lead proved too much to overcome as the Red Dragon bats touched up five Union pitchers for 10 hits. First-year Lucas Miller and senior Jack Klein were able to hold the Red Dragons in check during their assignments, both posting scoreless innings of work. Miller's classmate Nolan Whelan was handed the loss after allowing the first two runs of the game in his two innings of action.

The Garnet Chargers are poised to make their home debut at Central Park "A" Diamond on Wednesday, March 11 at 3:30 p.m.
