#20 Men's Hockey Drops First Quarterfinal Game, 5-2

PRINCETON, N.J. – The #20 Union College men's hockey team fell 5-2 against Princeton University in the first game of the ECAC Hockey Tournament quarterfinals at Hobey Baker Rink Friday night and will battle to keep its season alive on Saturday against the Tigers at 7 p.m.

The fifth-seeded Garnet Chargers (22-11-3) got two goals late in the third period, but fourth-seeded Princeton (16-12-3) had already built a four-goal lead by the time Union found the back of the net.

Union entered the game on a seven-game unbeaten streak and riding two straight shutouts over Brown University. The second shutout of the Bears was in the Opening Round of the conference tournament on March 7 and sent Union to Princeton for the best-of-three series. Union also averaged the most goals per game since Feb. 1 entering Friday at 5.11.

Joshua Karnish opened the scoring for Princeton 6:18 into play Friday and ended Union's shutout streak at 160:06. That marks a program record with sophomore Cameron Korpi manning the crease for the entirety of the streak.

The Garnet Chargers outshout Princeton by three in the opening period with their best chance coming with 2:56 left on the clock when senior Nate Hanley rang one off the post. Despite that look on goal and a power play to end the first period, the Tigers took their one-goal advantage into the intermission.

Jake Manfre scored twice in a three-goal second period for the Tigers as they started putting the game away in front of a crowd of 1,427.

Union went scoreless on six power-play chances in the game but finally broke through with five minutes remaining in the game to prevent being shut out by the Tigers for the first time since 2022. Senior Parker Lindauer netted Union's second goal of the game with 64 seconds remaining following an empty-netter from the Tigers.

Korpi was lifted for first-year Brayden Gillespie after allowing his fourth goal of the game 42 seconds into the third period. Gillespie saved all five shots he faced in the closing stanza.

The Garnet Chargers will fight to keep their season alive on Saturday, March 14 at 7 p.m.
