Union Softball Drops Doubleheader on Day Two of Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Union College softball team dropped both games on Sunday afternoon during day two of the NTC Spring Games at Hancock Park, falling 9–0 to Colby College and suffering a second loss to Middlebury College by a score of 11–3.

Game 1: Colby 9, Union 0

Colby scored eight runs in the fifth inning to secure a 9–0 victory over the Garnet Chargers.

The Mules got on the board early, plating a run in the first inning when Emma Burnham scored on an error to take a 1–0 lead. After four scoreless innings, Colby broke the game open with a dominant offensive surge in the fifth. Juliana Kiley started the rally with an RBI double to center field that scored Ella Wilcox, and she later came home on a single by Victoria Ramirez to extend the lead to 3–0.

The momentum continued when Kat Xiong singled through the left side and advanced to third on an error, allowing both Sophia Hammel and Kathryne Clay to score. Carissa Cassidy followed with a bunt single that drove in Xiong, then later scored herself on another defensive miscue to push the lead to seven.

Wilcox added an RBI double to right field to score Burnham, and Kiley capped the inning with an RBI single up the middle to bring Wilcox home and seal the 9–0 win.

Game 2: Middlebury 11, Union 3

In game two, Union's offense was led by senior Elizabeth Werner, who went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs. Junior Sophia Gomes also recorded a hit, drove in a run, and reached base twice. Senior Ellie Wintringer added a hit and scored one of Union's three runs, while senior Haley Gibbons and first-year Coco Medeiros each crossed the plate.

Gomes walked with the bases loaded to bring in Medeiros, giving Union a 1–0 lead in the second inning. However, Middlebury quickly responded as Olivia Fleming doubled to left field, allowing Sarah LaFond to score. Fleming later scored on a passed ball to give Middlebury a 2–1 lead.

In the third inning, Union regained a 3–2 lead when Werner doubled to center field, driving in Gibbons and Wintringer.

However, Middlebury answered with a series of hits and defensive miscues to take an 8–3 lead in the third. Jen Westphal doubled down the third-base line to score Olivia Scholes. Katelyn Mikros reached on a dropped fly ball, allowing Fleming and LaFond to score unearned runs. Another dropped fly ball allowed Mikros and Reagan Adiletta to score additional unearned runs. Emily Dowd capped off the inning with a double to left field, bringing in Kelley Dever.

In the fourth inning, Adiletta hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score a run. Later, LaFond scored on a throwing error, and Scholes also crossed the plate. Finally, Mikros reached on a shortstop error, allowing Fleming to score an unearned run as Middlebury secured an 11–3 victory.

Union continues its action in the Spring Games on Monday against Augustana at 10:00 a.m. and Buffalo State at 12:45 p.m.
