CLERMONT, Fla. - The Union College Softball team suffered a 10-0 loss to Augustana University before rebounding in a 8-4 win to Buffalo State University on Monday in day three of the NTC Spring Games at Hancock Park.
GAME 1: Augustana 10, Union 0
Augustana scored six of its 10 runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding 8–0 lead and to secure an eventual 10–0 win over the Garnet Chargers.
The Vikings jumped out early in game one, plating a run in the first inning when Aubrey Gradin singled to left-center to drive in Alexis Duke. In the second, Emily Gad singled to center field to score Lilli Burton and extend the lead to 2–0.
After a scoreless third inning, the Vikings broke the game open with six runs in the fourth. Gad doubled to center field, driving in Burton and Mikaylin Hofer. Emma Schmidt followed with a sacrifice bunt that allowed Gad to score. Madi Bickell then capped the inning with a three-run home run, bringing home Gradin and Duke to push the lead to 8–0.
Augustana added two more runs in the fifth to close out the game. Addie Garr singled to drive in Emma Evans, and shortly after, a fielder's choice allowed Garr to score the game's 10th and final run.
GAME 2: Union 8, Buffalo State 4
In game two, sophomore Kayla Springer led the offense, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored. Classmate
Carra Cleaves went 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI, while senior
Haley Gibbons added a hit, two walks, and one RBI. Classmate
Ellie Wintringer contributed a hit and a run.
Union drove in four runs in the first inning to take a 4–0 lead. First-year
Kaylee Shaw scored the game's first run on a wild pitch. Springer later came home on an RBI single by Gibbons. Another wild pitch brought in Wintringer, and junior
Sophia Burynski capped the inning with an RBI double to bring Wintringer home.Â
Buffalo State answered with two unearned runs in the bottom half, as Grace Albano scored following an error, and a bases-loaded walk by Deme Kellogg cut the lead to 4–2.
Union added on in the second when Cleaves hit a solo home run, then extended the advantage in the third on an RBI single from first-year
Amelia Ormond that scored junior
Maddy Ewald.
In the fourth, Union pushed the lead to 8–2.
Amy FitzPatrick reached on an error that allowed Springer to score, and later, first-year
Daniella Nocera came home during a stolen base sequence by sophomore
Gianna Guastaferro.
Buffalo State made a late push with two runs in the fourth on RBI singles, but Union's early offensive surge held up for the 8–4 win.
The Garnet Chargers return to action on Wednesday for a doubleheader against Oberlin at 10:00 a.m. and Luther at 2:45 p.m.
