ORLANDO, Fla. – The Union College women's tennis team fell a few points short to Kalamazoo College in a non-conference match on Monday afternoon at the USTA National Campus, ending up on the wrong end of a 5-2 score.
Senior
Sydney Alphabet led Union (2-5) with a pair of victories on the day, as Union swept the doubles matches but could only muster one singles win.
The day started well for the Garnet Chargers, who won all three doubles matches to take the opening point. Alphabet and sophomore
Calista Finkelstein got the day started with a 6-3 win at the third flight, followed by a 6-2 second-doubles win for seniors
Claire Langille and
Skylar Semon. Fellow seniors
Kennedy Alexis and
Chara Meidani completed the sweep with a 6-4 victory at the top flight.
Kalamazoo took back the lead for the first time after identical 6-0, 7-5 wins at sixth and third singles, but Alphabet knotted the score at two with a 6-3, 6-4 fourth-singles win over Molly Stevison.
All three of the remaining matches could have gone either way, but the Hornets emerged victorious in all three to clinch the win. Meidani fell by a 4-6, 6-1, (10-6) score to Addison Lyons in second-singles action, and Alexis needed just a few more points in a close 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 loss to Daryn Krause at the fifth flight. Semon also lost in a supertiebreaker at the top flight, dropping a 4-6, 7-5, (10-4) match to Juliana Pullen.
Union will return to action tomorrow, when the Garnet Chargers take on conference foe St. Lawrence University in a non-conference match beginning at 5:30 p.m.
