ORLANDO, Fla. – The Union College women's tennis team earned the first point of the day on the doubles courts, but St. Lawrence University came back to sweep singles play to post a 6-1 non-conference victory over the Garnet Chargers on Tuesday evening at the USTA National Campus.
Union (2-6) started the day strong, coming back to win at second and third doubles to earn the day's opening point. Senior
Sydney Alphabet and sophomore
Samantha Jacobs stormed back to even doubles play with a 7-5 win at the third flight, rattling off six straight games after falling behind by a 5-1 margin. Seniors
Claire Langille and
Skylar Semon also made a big comeback to earn the point for Union at second singles, fighting off three match points down love-40 in the 12th game to eventually even the match at six and then taking the tiebreaker by a 7-4 score.
Unfortunately for the Garnet Chargers, Union could not transfer that momentum into singles play, coming up short in all six matches. Langille battled Elisa Iuri into a first-set tiebreak before losing in straight sets, while first-year
Jenny Park also came a point short of a second-set tiebreaker in her sixth-singles match with Maya Stepic.
Union will close out its Spring Break schedule tomorrow with a 10 a.m. match against Centre College.
