Baseball Wraps Up Spring Break Trip

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Union College baseball team lost a gritty game to Colby College Tuesday evening at Chain of Lake Park, wrapping up its Spring Break Trip at the RussMatt Central Florida Classic with a 10-7 loss.

The Mules (10-4) used a four-run ninth inning to complete a five-run comeback over the Garnet Chargers (5-8), capped off by a bases-clearing double from Henry Silva. First-year Lucas Miller was stellar during his 2.2 innings of relief work later in the game, but he was eventually outdueled by Colby's Matt Mahoney. The winning pitcher for the Mules fanned seven in 2.2 innings of relief and earned his second win of the season.

The Garnet Chargers had an early comeback of their own after Colby scored the first two runs of the game. Beginning with a two-RBI double from sophomore Dylan Swarts, Union scored seven straight runs to take a 7-2 lead by the end of the fifth inning.

Union slashed out 10 hits and walked four times in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to build its lead. Six hitters drove in runs for the Garnet Chargers, and Swarts, sophomore Benjamin Raphael, and senior Caleb Miller all had multiple hits.

Miller went 3-5, was intentionally walked, stole two bases, and scored the 109th run of his career. The next time he crosses home plate, he will tie Jack Koch '21 for the program record in runs scored.

Lucas Miller was pitching to Patrick Shrake in the eighth inning with one out, two runners on, and Union holding onto a one-run lead as the game was delayed due to weather. When Miller eventually came back out on the mound over 40 minutes later, he was able to escape the jam by inducing a groundout to Shrake (and nearly an inning-ending double play) and an infield popup.

Junior Jacob Skarlis was on the mound for his first relief appearance of the season when Colby took the lead in the ninth. Raphael led off Union's half of the final inning with a hit-by-pitch, but the Garnet Chargers could not muster up a second comeback and dropped its final game in the Sunshine State.

Union returns home to begin Liberty League action on Friday, March 27 at 4 p.m. against Vassar College from Central Park "A" Diamond.
