Baseball Opens Conference Slate With 15-5 Win Over Vassar

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team scored in six of its seven trips to the plate during a 15-5 victory over Vassar College to open Liberty League play at Central Park "A" Diamond Friday evening.

As Union (6-8, 1-0 Liberty League) bashed out 15 hits, senior Alex Oppenheimer struck out six Vassar (3-11, 0-4 Liberty League) batters during the longest outing of his career.

Seniors Cooper Ames and Andrew Keaveney both collected four hits, and eight of the 10 batters Union sent to the dish recorded at least one RBI.

Trailing 3-0 in the first, Keaveney drove in his first of two runs on a sacrifice fly. Union went on to score 13 runs in the next four innings to build a 14-5 lead.

The Garnet Chargers drew three walks during a six-run, second-inning rally and had three hits with two outs. Three batters after senior Caleb Miller drew a bases-loaded walk in that inning, sophomore Dylan Swarts drove him home with a single up the middle. It marked the 110th run of his career, making him the program leader in runs scored (110).

Junior Ryan Kolodziejczyk hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth. His second career dinger put Union up 13-5.

Oppenheimer retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced as Union kept racking up runs, setting up his team to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh and enact the conference's run rule.

Swarts led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk, and as sophomore Benjamin Raphael stood in the batters box with the bases loaded four batters later, Swarts scored the walkoff run on a wild pitch.

Union scored 15 runs on the Brewers for the second time in the last five games. The Garnet Chargers and Brewers square off for a doubleheader in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. beginning at 12 p.m. on Sunday, March 29.
