Women's Tennis Battles Centre in Spring Break Finale

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Union College women's tennis team finished up its annual Spring Break slate on Wednesday morning, coming out on the wrong end of a 5-2 match to Centre College at the USTA National Campus.

After Centre (6-4) swept the three doubles matches to grab the early lead, senior Chara Meidani temporarily got Union (2-7) back to even with a 6-2, 6-1 win at second singles over Olivia Watson. Centre moved closer to victory with points at the first and fifth flights, but senior Claire Langille fended off the finish by outlasting Carlie Mitchell in a supertiebreaker, 10-6, after the pair traded 6-4 sets to start out.

Senior Sydney Alphabet and first-year Jenny Park both came back from a set down to force supertiebreakers in their remaining matches, but both went the way of Centre. Park came up a few points short in a 6-2, 4-6, (10-6) sixth-singles defeat to Sara Dunn, while Alphabet just could not pull out a victory in a nearly two-and-a-half-hour marathon against Carrie Foster, falling by a 7-5 (7-4), 3-6, (16-14) score in fourth-singles action.

Union will return north and continue non-conference play next Friday, April 3, hosting Binghamton University for a 4 p.m. match at the Union Tennis Courts.
