Sheldon Named Liberty League Indoor Field Athlete of the Year

TROY, N.Y. – Junior Ashley Sheldon capped off a stellar indoor season by earning Liberty League Indoor Track Field Athlete of the Year honors, the Liberty League announced on Thursday afternoon.

Sheldon is Union's first women's track student-athlete to be named Field Athlete of the Year and only the second ever to earn sole possession of a season-ending award, joining Noemie Bechu '17, who was named Liberty League Track Athlete of the Year in 2014-15.

The junior had a record-setting season for Union in the high jump, becoming the first female Liberty League athlete ever to clear 1.73 meters on the way to a third-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The championship effort capped a stellar postseason for Sheldon, who cleared 1.68 meters to win her second conference indoor title in three years at the Liberty League Championships and also took top honors at the AARTFC Championships with a top mark of 1.70 meters.

Sheldon was named to the USTFCCCA All-America first team in the high jump as a result of her third-place leap at nationals, just the fourth All-American in program history and third first-teamer. She also earned All-Region recognition in both the high jump and the 60-meter hurdles after breaking her own program standards in both events this season.

The Garnet Chargers will begin the outdoor season on Saturday, when Union travels to New Jersey for the Ramapo Invitational.
